RAGBRAI (n,v RAG-bry) = Register's (Des Moines' newspaper) Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa
Most common question asked: Does it benefit a cause? There is an extra amount you can pay to benefit Autism Awareness.
Another common question: Why? Answer: Still working on that... It is a physical challenge, one that requires some serious mental toughness and physical stamina. Other than that? Beats me!! Our average day of riding was 58 miles and about 5 hours actually on the bike. Our shortest days were 50 miles and our longest day was 83 or 107 miles depending on which route you choose. The weather was sunny for the most part, the winds were mostly at our backs with an occasional headwind or side wind. We didn't ride in the rain but came VERY VERY close to it on Monday as a big storm that produced hail was bearing down on us very quickly.
This has been an annual event for the past 41 years and every year it's routed differently and no two routes are ever the same however some of the towns have hosted a RAGBRAI. This years route was 406.6 miles with an optional 24.4 mile loop to make Monday's route over 100 miles for the day, commonly referred to as a "century ride".
