Whether or not it would have been effective, it might not have mattered because 5 minutes after we got everything out, it POURED rain. It hasn't rained in close to a month, leave it to us to mistakenly do the rain dance as we were setting up. There were a few hearty souls out and about, but for 2 hours, we relaxed, talked about rescheduling and took the time to watch the rain. It's one of my favorite sounds and by far one of my favorite smells. The rain eventually lifted and the masses came, until almost 2 in the afternoon.
I heard an interesting fact the other day, a person is much more likely to talk about their issues to their hairdressers than a shrink because the hairdresser touches them. I have been thinking about that since. It's amazing the power of touch, or the simple act of listening. We sold a lot of junk yesterday, but even more important, we listened, we were compassionate, we treated people with respect and in return we got more than we bargained for. People opened up and we heard the heartache of many. There is something therapeutic about strangers, it's the ability to be genuinely honest without being judged. Our yard sale was a success, but not monetarily, although it was our most successful yard sale, but it was a success because we were able to help those who needed it.
